What’s the catch?

There is no catch. We pay for your bike by displaying advertisements from companies that want a novel way to reach the college demographic. The revenue generated from this allows us to provide YOU with FREE bike rentals.

How can it be free?

Each bike rented from Free Bike Rentals displays an advertisement from companies that want a novel way to reach the college demographic. The revenue generated from this allows us to provide YOU with FREE bike rentals.

What are the requirements?

  • You must be 18 years or older.
  • Currently enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the 2008 Fall Semester.
  • Provide a valid credit card on file in case the bike or lock is not returned. (Your card will not be charged unless you do not return our equipment)
  • Check in once a month for bike tune ups and advertisement changes.



How do I sign up?

We are currently accepting applicants for the Fall 2008 school year until August 31st. All applicants will be notified by August 31st whether their application was accepted.

What if I need a bike mid-way through the semester?

You can apply for a bike even after school has started, if someone decides they no longer need their bike, we'll contact you to let you know.

What do I do with my bike when it the weather will no longer permit bike use?

During the winter Free Bikes stores all bikes in its warehouse.

What happens if my bike breaks?

If your bike needs repair due to normal wear and tear, bring the bike to our registered bike repair people and they'll fix the bikes for free. However if damage is caused by neglect, you will be responsible for repair.

What happens if my bike is stolen?

We provide you with a Kryptonite Bike Lock with your rental, which if used properly, will keep your bike from being stolen. If it is stolen however, you will be responsible for replacement cost of the bike.

What if I don't have a credit card?

If you do not personally have a credit card, you can have a parental guardian put their credit card on file.
